A couple in The Woodlands, Texas, is grieving the loss of two French Bulldogs they say should have lived long, healthy lives. Felicia Luna and Eric Ramirez purchased the brother-and-sister pair from Pet Fair inside The Woodlands Mall on February 11, spending nearly $9,000 in hopes of bringing home loyal companions. Instead, within just four months, both puppies had tragically passed away.
According to the couple, the puppies were already being treated for respiratory infections when they bought them. For days, Luna and Ramirez went to the store to administer the prescribed medication before finally taking the dogs home. At first, the illness appeared manageable, but their condition worsened quickly.
“After the second visit to our vet, we realized the antibiotics weren’t working the way they should,” Ramirez explained. Despite ongoing treatments, the female pup, Margo, continued to decline. Just three weeks after leaving the store, she died. “We watched her struggle to breathe every single day,” Luna recalled. “It was heartbreaking to feel so helpless.”
Their male puppy initially seemed stronger, but weeks later, he too developed severe breathing problems. Less than four months after the purchase, both French Bulldogs were gone. Their veterinarian confirmed that both deaths were caused by persistent respiratory illness.
For Luna and Ramirez, the loss has been emotionally devastating. Beyond the grief, they were also left without financial or legal protection. Since the purchase was made in cash, the sale was considered “as is,” which meant they had no recourse once the puppies became critically ill. “We felt completely powerless,” Luna said, explaining how their excitement quickly turned into frustration and sorrow.
When Luna tried contacting the pet store for answers, she said her calls went unanswered. FOX 26 later reached out to Pet Fair. At first, the store claimed there was no record of the sale. Only when presented with receipts and paperwork did they acknowledge the transaction, offering no further comment.
Now, the couple is sharing their story as a warning to others. They hope that families considering buying pets will take extra precautions—such as requesting full veterinary records, demanding health guarantees, or considering adoption from shelters or trusted breeders. Animal advocates also stress the risks associated with purchasing pets from commercial stores, especially when animals may already have pre-existing health issues.
For Luna and Ramirez, the loss of Margo and her brother is still raw. What was supposed to be a joyful new chapter in their lives turned into a painful lesson about trust, transparency, and the need for accountability in the pet industry.
