For most of us, New Year’s Day is a time for slow starts, warm coffee, and quiet reflection. But for one family in Westerly, Rhode Island, the first morning of 2026 nearly turned into a nightmare. What began as a peaceful holiday stroll down Atlantic Avenue ended with a heart-stopping rescue that has since captured the hearts of animal lovers worldwide.

A Walk Gone Wrong

It was just before 9:00 a.m. on January 1st. The air was a biting 15°F, with wind chills making it feel more like 4°F. Phoenix, a five-year-old Yellow Lab (often described by onlookers as a Golden Retriever due to his stunning coat), was enjoying the crisp morning air with his owner. Like many dogs captivated by the sight of a wide-open space, Phoenix wandered toward Little Masachaug Pond.

To a dog, a frozen pond looks like a solid playground. But the ice was treacherously thin. Near the center of the pond, the surface gave way, and Phoenix plunged into the slushy, bone-chilling water.

The Fight for Survival

The sight was agonizing for his owner, who remained on the shore, helpless against the thin ice. Phoenix was struggling, his paws frantically treading water as he tried to pull his heavy, water-soaked fur back onto the ice shelf. Each time he tried, the ice crumbled further.

Fortunately, the Misquamicut Fire Department and Watch Hill Fire Department were on the scene within minutes. When Deputy Chief Steve Howard arrived, he saw a dog that had seemingly accepted his fate. “It was the chillest dog I’ve ever seen in my life,” Howard later remarked. “He never made a sound. He was just waiting.”

The Heroic Rescue

The rescue was a choreographed display of bravery. Firefighters donned specialized “ice rescue suits”—vibrant orange and red waterproof gear designed to keep them buoyant and warm in sub-zero temperatures.

As a crowd gathered on the shore, a firefighter began the dangerous journey across the pond. He didn’t walk; he crawled flat on his stomach, distributing his weight to keep from falling through himself. You could hear the ominous crack of the ice in the silence of the morning. When he finally reached the center, he secured a rope around Phoenix.

The team on the shore began to haul them in. Through chunks of broken ice and freezing slush, the rescuer held onto Phoenix, refusing to let go until the dog’s paws touched solid ground.

A Warm Ending to a Cold Day

Once back on shore, the scene was one of pure relief. Phoenix was shivering but remarkably unharmed. While the firefighters were evaluated for hypothermia, their focus remained on the pup.

After a quick check-up by the Westerly Ambulance Corps, Phoenix was cleared to go home. Deputy Chief Howard checked in on the family later that evening and received the best news possible: Phoenix was curled up by the fire, had enjoyed an extra-large helping of dinner, and was taking a very well-deserved nap.

The Misquamicut Fire Department used the incident as a vital reminder to the community: “No ice is ever safe.” While the rescue was the “first successful call of 2026,” it serves as a permanent reminder of the lengths we go to for our four-legged family members. At WeDogz, we salute these first responders who didn’t hesitate to crawl into the freezing unknown to bring a best friend home.
