In the rolling green landscapes of Cumbria, UK, a giant was waiting for a second chance. His name is Brody, and at 66kg (over 145 lbs), he is more than just a pet; he is a presence. Often described by the dedicated staff at Animal Concern Cumbria as a “small polar bear,” Brody stands an impressive 3 feet 3 inches on all fours and reaches a towering 6 feet when he stands on his hind legs. But despite his intimidating scale, Brody had a very gentle-dog problem: he was a lap dog trapped in a giant’s body.

The Heavy Heart of a Gentle Giant
Brody didn’t find himself in the rescue system because of a lack of love. Like many giant breeds, his Pyrenean Mountain Dog adoption journey began when his previous owners realized they simply could no longer provide the level of attention and physical management such a massive animal requires.
Pyrenean Mountain Dogs, historically bred to guard livestock from wolves and bears in the high mountains, are known for their calm, vigilant, and intensely loyal nature. However, in a domestic setting, a dog that consumes 1kg of biscuits a day—and has a refined palate for fish pâté and squirty cheese—can be a logistical challenge. When Brody arrived at the shelter in late 2025, he was shaggy and a bit overwhelmed, his majestic white coat in desperate need of care.

A Viral Sensation: “Praying for Oxygen”
The shelter knew that finding the right home for a 66kg senior dog would require a special kind of reach. They took to social media with a humorous and heart-tugging post that quickly went viral. One particular photo showed Brody sitting squarely on the lap of a shelter volunteer named Georgia. The caption joked that while Brody was “thrilled with himself,” Georgia was “somewhere underneath him, praying for oxygen and better life choices.”
This “small polar bear” imagery struck a chord with the public. Within days, the post was shared thousands of times, and Animal Concern Cumbria was “truly overwhelmed” by hundreds of applications from across the UK. People weren’t just looking for a dog; they were captivated by Brody’s soulful eyes and his quirky habit of trying to fit his massive frame onto any available human lap.

The Transformation: From Shaggy to Majestic
Before he could head to a new home, Brody needed a “full-blown spa day.” The shelter team spent hours de-matting his thick fur, a task they described as transforming a “shaggy armchair-with-legs” back into the “glorious mountain fluff” he was born to be.
During his time at the center, the staff learned that Brody wasn’t just big—he was incredibly kind. He showed a deep love for head scratches, tennis balls, and the company of people. Despite his age and size, he only required about two 30-minute walks a day, preferring to spend the rest of his time “tootling” around a garden or lounging on a—very sturdy—sofa.

A 2026 New Year’s Beginning
As adoptions reopened in early January 2026, the search for the perfect match concluded. The shelter identified a family with extensive experience in giant breeds who understood exactly what a dog like Brody needed.
Just this week, Brody officially moved into his forever home. He didn’t just gain a new human family; he gained a pack. Brody is now settling in with a Poodle companion and an unexpected new best friend: a pet bunny. According to his new owners, the “polar bear” has been the perfect gentleman, coexisting peacefully with his smaller housemates and finally claiming a sofa of his own.
Brody’s story is a beautiful reminder to the WeDogz community that no dog is “too much” for the right heart. Whether they weigh 6kg or 66kg, every furbaby deserves a place where they aren’t just tolerated, but celebrated for exactly who they are.
