A little, frightened shelter puppy named Marlee captivated the hearts of millions after a TikTok video showed her shaking in the arms of her foster parent. Jess from Alabama (@jessfromalabama) carefully cuddles the twelve-week-old puppy close and offers words of comfort.

The puppy shakes uncontrollably while she is wrapped in a plush towel robe. Jess said she couldn’t leave Marlee at the shelter and pledged to take care of her until she finds a permanent home. People were moved by how scared the dog was and how kind her foster mom was as soon as the video went public.

Later, Jess said in the comments that Marlee had been living on the streets before going to the shelter. Dogs that look like pit bull or Staffordshire terrier mixes generally have a hard time in shelters.

They stay longer and have fewer possibilities for adoption because many still think these breeds are bad. But studies demonstrate that visual breed identification is often wrong, especially with dogs who are mixed breeds. Many people are branded based only on how they seem, even though DNA tests later show that they are from different breeds.

Studies also show how important foster care is, saying that it greatly increases the possibilities of adoption and lowers the number of dogs that have to be put down, especially those who are afraid of or stigmatized because of their breed.

In the video, Marlee’s trembling body is tucked into Jess’s arms as the foster mom keeps her warm, supported, and comforted. It’s clear the puppy is still overwhelmed after her difficult start in life.

Viewers flooded the comments with heartbreak, frustration, and gratitude—heartbreak at seeing such a young dog so frightened, frustration with the circumstances that led to her fear, and gratitude for Jess’s compassion. Many even urged Jess to adopt Marlee herself, affectionately calling it a “foster fail,” the term used when a foster parent decides to keep a pet permanently.

But studies reveal that “foster fails” aren’t really failures. Research indicates that acquiring a foster pet does not diminish a caregiver’s propensity to continue fostering. In fact, it often makes individuals feel stronger and more fulfilled.

Foster adoption is most common among older, retired, long-term pet owners or those who have significant emotional bonds with their foster pets. Experts say that the term “foster fail” is not correct because adopting a foster pet is usually a natural and happy end to the fostering process.

The most important thing is that the scared little puppy is no longer alone in a shelter kennel, whether Jess adopts Marlee or helps her find a new family that is kind and loving. Marlee has had to deal with a lot of scary things on the streets at such a young age. She is now in a safe location where she may relax, get better, and understand what it feels like to be safe.

Her story is a great reminder of how foster families give animals that need it the most love, warmth, and security. And for the millions of people who have seen Marlee’s body shake and then relax in her foster mom’s arms, it’s a reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness may have a significant impact on an animal’s life.
